Pet peeve: Using ppl as an abbreviation for "people."
IMing someone who is offline to see if they are online is mostly a learned behavior. Generally people who hide out in offline mode make the mistake of IMing people while they are "offline" which completely blows their cover. If you don't want to chat mark yourself as busy. Who are you hiding from Mark?
